Also known as Heliotrope, Bloodstone is a dark green variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Its recognizable red spots, streaks, or splashes come from iron oxides, especially hematite, creating the blood-like markings that inspired its traditional name. Bloodstone may also include areas of yellow, brown, white, or deeper red within its green body.

With a hardness of approximately 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale, Bloodstone is a durable natural crystal often shaped into polished freeforms, palm stones, cabochons, carvings, spheres, and beads.
