Pyrite, or "fool's gold," is an iron sulfide mineral with the chemical formula FeS2. It has a brass-yellow color and a bright metallic luster. Pyrite has a hardness of 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it harder than many other metallic minerals. It commonly forms cubic, octahedral, or pyritohedral crystals, often with striated faces.

Historically, pyrite was used as a source of sulfur for sulfuric acid production. Pyrite is sometimes associated with gold deposits and may contain small amounts of gold. In some cases, miners mine pyrite-rich deposits for their gold content. The name "pyrite" comes from the Greek word "pyr" meaning "fire" due to its ability to create sparks when struck. Historically, it has been used for fire-starting and in early firearms.
